Octavia Cannon, DO
According to Octavia Cannon, DO, meeting new people is one of the greatest awards of being a physician—and she really means new people! As an AOA board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Cannon focuses on treating the whole person, whether delivering babies or advising patients on reproductive health. “I grew up in a community with a lot of DOs, so I didn’t really realize they were different until I was in high school,” she explains. “Once I learned about the osteopathic approach to care, becoming a DO was the only choice for me.”
Why did you choose osteopathic medicine?
By the time I was 11, I knew I wanted to become a doctor. My first role model was my pediatrician, who happened to be a DO. Practicing the osteopathic philosophy has made me a more compassionate and thorough physician.
What do you love most about being a doctor?
I get excited when I can help people feel mentally, spiritually and physically healthy. I really love delivering babies! I feel honored that women trust me with their health—and that of their children.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Anytime I can help someone become a healthier person, that’s a win! There have been times when patients have reached out years later to thank me for helping them change their lives—that’s always gratifying.
What/who inspires you?
My parents. They met in high school and have been married for 51 years. Their experiences have provided so many life lessons. Their work ethic, humility and love for family have shaped who I am.
