Mikhail ‘Doctor Mike’ Varshavski, DO
Known as “Doctor Mike” to his 8 million social media followers, Mikhail Varshavski, DO, is spreading the word far and wide about the benefits of osteopathic medicine. “I chose to become a DO because I’m a fan of treating the patient as a whole person and practicing preventive medicine,” says Doctor Mike, a family physician based in New York—and the most-followed doctor on social media.
In October 2019, Doctor Mike created a new video for the Doctors That DO osteopathic medicine awareness campaign. The video offers tips on how to find a good doctor and points people to the AOA’s “Find Your DO” online search tool.

What inspired you to become a DO?
I was exposed to osteopathic medicine at a young age when my father attended osteopathic medical school. I witnessed his ability to provide relief for patients using Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. I’ve always been a critical thinker with a focus on open communication and I think those skills go hand in hand with being a DO.
What do you love most about being a doctor?
The connection you develop with your patients. Instead of answering to clients or shareholders, I’m accountable to the human beings who entrust me with their health—that’s something truly special.
What is your proudest achievement?
Being able to grow and maintain a social media network over 4 million strong while completing my family medicine residency. Social media allows me to reach not only my patients, but millions around the world with my health message.
What/who inspires you?
My father. Watching him come to a new country, learn the language, complete medical school and residency, open a successful private practice and maintain a healthy family life had a profound impact on me. His accomplishments inspire me to set even higher goals for myself.
Describe your perfect day.
I wake up at 8 a.m. on a beautiful 75-degree day, walk my Siberian Husky, Roxy, and spend the morning meeting with patients. Then, I head to my studio to film a segment debunking the latest health fad, followed by a solid workout on the basketball or tennis court. Finally, I end the day hanging out with my closest loved ones.
